Good that you asked, I asked the same question from some of my friends long long time back, which in our group there was a person from Bhutan (A Bhutanese) he promptly answered "Why dont you measure things like, GROSS NATIONAL HAPPINESS"?

All of us were speechless Actually Why Dont we?

Yeah but I think he was referring to the Happiness of Country as a whole!

Like someone is doing good financially (personally) but very stressed about the situation of the country, I think commonly can seen in Sri Lanka! So even we have money we still depressed over something, you know, that kind of dissatisfaction... if they could bring in a benchmark of that sort.. that "How happy people are about where they live?"

Agree with your comment on multy party system is hampering our development.
Because great project plan for one party can be thrown away just after a election by a newly elected party.
But it is hard to believe fascism is better than democratic stream only because you say so.
One long lasting good leader for a country can carry the country for rapid development in all areas. But such leaders are hard to find.For entire world we had only very few such leaders. (ex Castro,Marchos,Lenin).
But for the ruling purpose they can use democratic stream rather than fascist stream.

My personal view "Sri Lion" is happiness is not depending upon the place where you live.
50000 years ago man lived in forests and cages.2000 years ago man lived in simple and primitive houses.Can we ever say that they are the most unhappy bunch?.I dont think so. Even if you live in a top developed country or live in poorly developed African country there might be 50% people who live a happy life, and other half is utterly unhappy.

True real communism existed in Russia ,only in Lenin's Era and one more decade after that. Starling's made it to fascist communism.
So many thinkers ,Philosophers,writers, were expelled to SIBIRIA.Land lords were fled to different countries.They even assassinated people who oppose to them.

Scholars and writers like Boris Pasternak (famous for Doctor Zhivago,Alexander Solunitsin (famous for the novel " One day in the life of Ivan Denishvich") both nobel prize winners for litritue had to withdraw their nobel prize.They were given the nobel prize not because they exposed the true Russian communism at the moment,(USA is happy to do those things),but for the true artistic merit of their works.(I personally read both novels)
