I haven't lived in Queenstown. But visited several times both for sight seeeing and for conferences. Hire a car and drive around. There are many scenic places. Specially the drive to Milford Sound is quite beautiful. Stay in Te-Anau. September is nearly the start of Spring. It should be fine.
