S Rajesh, cricinfo stats editor, points out that there is a microscopic chance that Sri Lanka qualify to the semi-finals even if they lose. He says that if New Zealand make more than 222 (or so) and beat Sri Lanka by one run, the Kiwis will be on their way home.

Net run-rate primer: NRR is calculated by total runs scored/total overs played - runs conceded/overs bowled. (If a team gets bowled out, it counts as them having played out 20 overs). So if New Zealand make 222 and win by one run, their run-rate will be 0.448 while Sri Lanka's will be 0.45. Hat tip to S Rajesh for that impressive bit of calculation.
