I think some may have confused the basic issue here. The idea is to have three independent extended desktops displayed on three monitors - NOT to mirror the displays using a splitter!
The answer is - this depends on your notebook. For example I have a user who works with very large timetabling spreadsheets , so I have set up three monitors for her.
She is using a Dell Notebook, docked to a Dell E-Port Plus replicator. The replicator has TWO Display port connections AND a VGA output. So three monitors can be connected and these are available in the extended mode under display settings. Also note that the having the connectors is NOT enough. The graphics chip has to support these three monitors. For eg Intel HD graphics above 4000 series will support this.
