The ruleâs objective was to make the ODI exciting again. As teams have to name a Super sub before the toss, the rule was favoring the team winning the toss. So in effect, if a teamâs intent was to
- win the toss, bat first - Super sub would be a bowler
- win the toss, field first - super sub would be a batter
This made the matches typically a 12 Vs. 11 for the team winning the toss, since the team losing the toss, either played super sub throughout the game or ended not using him at all.
So it was removed.
May be cricket should allow flexibility of in game substitutions like football. You name 13/14 players and use any combination during batting and bowling. This may make matches more exciting
