There's no evidence that smokers are more likely to get infected with Covid. But if they do get Covid, they are the first ones to go into the ventilator. :(
The likelihood of ending up in the ventilator is double the normal.

However, there were some suggestions that smokers might be less likely to get Covid, because Nicotine interferes with the ACE2 receptors and might reduce the virus infection. This remains unproven and possibly needs more deeper investigations.

It's not easy to design an anti-viral. These are made to trick the virus, thus blocking one or more of the steps it needs to replicate or infect host cells. Different drugs work by using different mechanisms. Also these drugs must not cause any harm to our cells. Viruses have polymerases that keep on adding nucleotides which are sort of like building blocks. A drug might present itself like one of these blocks, the viral polymerase grabs it thinking that its another building block but that's a decoy, not real. No more further blocks can be added. Then the virus is kaput.
It's not easy to explain in brief but it's not an easy job to develop a drug. May be will write on this another time.
As I mentioned earlier there are DNA vaccines already developed to cut the Covid virus precisely, but it will take at least two more years to get approval, as these have never, ever been used on humans.
As you say, a mission to Mars could be easier. It's the same "Engineering" here and there.
