10+ years in the industry and I tell you that you can survive the industry with no degree. But the thing is you need to have good experience there's not a lot of doors open for an individual with no degree to begin with.
If you don't have a degree, do a few certifications that go with your field of interest and get involved with freelancing or something and build up experience.
You need to have a portfolio to convince the recruiters that they cannot ignore you just because you don't have a degree you are not someone with no knowledge or experience. That's what matters most.
Build up experience. It's not impossible and nobody gives a fuck if you have a degree or not after you establish yourself a position.

I started self learning after O/L. Now earning more than 200k per month still without a degree. Degree doesn't matter when you have the talent and build experience gradually.

What is your position and how many heads are there in your company ?

1. I had passion in IT, and mostly did self study.
2. Failed A/Ls.
3. Started working at age of 20 without getting paid in a company as a trainee.
4. Went up in career ladder to become a Manager in the same company.
5. Worked freelance while doing full-time job
6. Resigned from job and started 2 companies. (reputed and popular startups in Colombo)
7. Now I have employees graduated from govt and pvt universities who get paid more than 200,000 monthly salary.

I'm mostly based on consistent selfstudy. I'm not saying paper qualifications doesn't matter.

PASSION IS THE KEY!

Im doing BIT 2nd yr now. working as a contract associate software engineer (that's how they call it :0). Pay is bad af (25K - 6 months experience) but still doing it because their training program is good. there are mentors to guide me.

My point is, there were lots of people from SLIIT, NSBM etc etc who pay around 15-20 lakhs for degrees but wasn't able to select from the interview. In the other hand I was able to. So degree isn't the big deal.

BIT is around 60K total. so go for it. you can do it in weekends.

See .. I did SLIIT and working abroad .. I`m holding a senior management position and entitled for around Rs. 1000K+ salary with other benefits. I have more than 9+years of experience in my field and I really don`t want any one to make a life worth decision based on advises of so called "self learners" and "free-lancers" who are hardly making Rs. 200K with odd jobs in online sites (Consider that US doller value is high and with few jobs you can cover Rs. 100K easily ). I`m talking about a career with potential to be a director and owning a respectable life with high salaries which you can showcase with anyone in the society.. It`s all up to you to take it or leave it , and still I strongly support the fact that a PROPER software engineer should have a relevant degree.

ලංකාවේ "මෘදුකාංග ඉංජිනේරු" කියන වෘතිය තවම හරියටම ප්‍රමිති ගත වෙලා නෑ.
ගොඩක් තොරතුරු තාක්ෂණ රැකියා ආයතන තමන්ගෙ වෘතිකයන්ට හිතු මනාපෙට මේ ඩෙසිග්නේශන් එක දෙනවා.

නමුත්, මෘදුකාංග ඉංජිනේරු කියන්නෙ සොෆ්ට්ෆෙයා එකක් හදන්න පුලුවන් කියන එකට වඩා බොහෝ ගැඹුරු ක්ෂේත්‍රයක්.

යම් දෙයක් ගැන නිසි අධ්‍යාපනයක් ලද කෙනෙක්, ඒ ගැන අවිධිමත් අධ්‍යාපනයක් ලද කෙනෙක්ට වඩා ඉදිරියෙන් සිටිය හැකියි.

නමුත් මගෙ අත්දැකීම් අනුව, ඩිග්‍රියක් තිබූ පමණින්ම නොව, ප්‍රායෝගික දැනුම සහ ඇකඩමික් දැනුම දෙකම තිබෙනවා නම් ඔබට සාපේක්ෂව සාර්ථක මෘදුකාංග ඉංජිනේරුවෙක් වීමට පුලුවන්.

Software Developer/programmer සහ Software Engineer කියන්නෙ දෙකක් කියලා අපි අවබෝධ කරගන ඕනා. මම නැවතත් කියනවා, මෘදුකාංගයක් සෑදීමට හැකි වූ පමණින් කිසිවෙක් මෘදුකාංග ඉංජිනේරුවෙක් වන්නේ නෑ.

ගොඩක් අය හිතාගෙන ඉන්නවා මොකක් හරි programming language, library, framework එකක් ඉගෙන ගත්තොත් එයා software engineer කෙනෙක් කියල. හැබැයි ඒක එහෙම නෙමෙයි.

ඉතින් "software engineer" කෙනෙක් වෙන්න සහ filed එකේ ඉස්සරහට යන්න නම් degree එක වැදගත්. හැබැයි ඒක ප්‍රමාණවත් සාධකය වෙන්නේ නෑ .

Started as a Junior android developer in around mid 2016. Now SSE and leading a scrum team as a Scrum Master too. The company is a reputed product company in Sri Lanka with a IT department of 120 in size. I am not quire sure what you are referring as heads, but assuming that it's about hierarchy levels, I report to a Delivery Manager and he reports to the CTO and we have other usual C level heads

Not all "Self learners" are struggling with odd jobs in online sites. I have 4 developers working under me, one from SLIIT too, a dumb guy I would say. Agree that degree acts as a showcase material in the society and some companies consider it as selection criteria. But, degree is not a must to become a PROPER software engineer. Having a degree has it's own advantages, but it doesn't determine one's talent and potential.

PS. Anyway I will be doing a master degree this year with my experiance since degree is a must to shine out of the crowd and what you say is true though
