Preface: 6 years in freelancing. 6 or 7 figures. 100KG in weight (my only concern). Highly respected in my programming niche. I'm booked until 2017 with projects.
1. Keep your work and life separated and balance. Be it Obama or the shittiest client, do not work after or before you work hours.
2. Maintain open source projects and contribute to them. You need a reputation to be in this field.
3. Your parents, relatives, spouse or nobody else will give damn about what you do... unless you show off the money you make.
4. Have a passion about something non-techy. I travel quite a lot (while working). I have been to many trips that my bank account balance is higher than I had when I leave home.
5. When applying for jobs, what really matters is how much you are valuable to the public. Say you are the bloody author or a dozen of related projects and the clients will follow you. Become a professional. Not a labor.
6. Learn proper English. Verbal and written both. The more fluent you speak during the interview, better chances you'll hold.
I haven't applied for any job in 2015. I have about 100-200 past clients and I'm booked for 2017 or so. The truth is machan freelancing is a more stable job than fixed office jobs. But you have to be financially strong or you are raped in your butt hole.
For mind and body fitness: Workout, listen to music, buy the gadgets you love, and travel (or any other hobby for that matter).
Also, don't give a damn about the SLIIT/BIT/BCS freaks. They have the Sri Lankan market, which is low budget and somehow fucked up so hard. There are some companies who make software for 5000 rupees. Besides, they are either filled with so much ego, or they have nothing other than the college education.
