Most ATMs still run om XP, XPe (embedded), Win 7 etc. A few use Linux. Yes... ATM functions does not depend on which OS - but the hackability does. There are instances where the entire XP on the ATM was replaced with another hacked version. It's not very hard to do so.
On another note there's an organised Bulgarian ATM scammer ring operating around the world - US, Europe and the Asia-Pacific.
I believe there are vulnerabilities to using outdated os like windows xp.
