Yes you could pay in Bitcoin till recently to buy a Teslar car(not now as he suspended on Eco issues due to minning and foot print of carbon)
Bitcoin is one Cripto Currency . There are others like facebook's cripto currency and many others Amazon etc)
Some cripto currency get a good demand hence value will go up. (like share , bond etc). Market value of anything is different from true value of it (eg land , oil, gas, dollars , rupees etc) They are speculative to some extent, but that does not mean they are Ponzi schemes or Pyramid schemes( which are totally different like apples from oranges !
There are people who earned a lot from these . One can burn fingers if do this without knowledge . So try to learn. But still you may go wrong like shares and hedging , eg CPC. Barrings bank.
But do not condemn cripto currency without knowing or you cant understand(I still cant understand whole process) and bitcoin. There are types of cripto currency and Bitcoin is 'old ' type and has some limitations new ones are Eutherium -blockchain with Smart Contract functionality. I do not know how this 'smart contract' affect digital currency and why?
