Nigeria 1-2 Uruguay: Veteran Forlan smashes home winner

    290231hp2.jpg

Uruguay picked up a hugely important three points in Group B of the Confederations Cup as it defeated Nigeria 2-1 at the Arena Fonte Nova in Salvador.

The South Americans started impressively and despite easing off after the opening 10 minutes Diego Lugano, who will miss the next game after picking up his second yellow card of the tournament, soon broke the deadlock.

John Obi Mikel equalized with a fine finish but in the second half Diego Forlan marked his 100th cap for the national team with the winning goal, as Stephen Keshi's men paid the price for failing to test Fernando Muslera for much of the game.

Uruguay began brightly but was unable to take control of the game during the early stages as Nigeria proved a threat on the counterattack.

La Celeste lost momentum but still managed to open the scoring in the 19th minute. Forlan's deflected cross was unintentionally dummied by Edinson Cavani at the near post and an unmarked Lugano scuffed the ball into the back of the net.

Some last-ditch defending from Maxi Pereira stopped Brown Ideye from getting a shot away on goal moments later, while at the other end Forlan was unable to squeeze a Luis Suarez cross in at the near post with 26 minutes played.

The game had gone flat after Oscar Tabarez's side had taken the lead, but the crowd were sparked back into life eight minutes before the break when the Super Eagles restored parity.

Ideye fed Mikel at the top of the box and the Chelsea midfielder jinked past the static Lugano and bent a fine left-footed finish into the top corner.

Nigeria narrowly missed out on taking an advantage into the interval as a scrambling Muslera did brilliantly to stop Diego Godin from putting through his own goal with a looping header in first-half stoppage time.

The African champions picked up where they left off following the restart but it was Uruguay who struck next with 51 minutes on the clock.

Suarez and Cavani combined to set up Forlan on the left of the area and he capped a century of appearances for La Celesete with an unstoppable, first-time finish beating Vincent Enyeama at his near post.

The goal came as a blow to the Super Eagles and the South Americans made it difficult for Keshi's men to break them down by bolstering their numbers behind the ball when not in possession.

With 20 minutes remaining Cavani wasted a glorious opportunity to wrap up the three points as after springing the offside trap he snatched at the ball and sliced his effort well off target.

The Napoli striker then failed to hit the target again with a free header shortly after but Tabarez's team retained its single-goal advantage up to the final whistle.

Although it stays in third position, Uruguay will have the upper hand heading into the final round of fixtures in Group B as it takes on Tahiti while Nigeria will face world champions Spain.

Giovinco: Japan winner was my revenge

    290089_heroa.jpg

The 26-year-old says his goal against the Asian nation has given him hunger to prove his critics wrong.Italy forward Sebastian Giovinco says he has enacted revenge over the people who doubted his quality after netting the winner against Japan on Wednesday.

The 26-year-old was on-hand to net the decisive goal in the 4-3 victory over the AFC nation in an enthralling clash which ultimately ensured the Azzurri's qualification for the Confederations Cup semifinals.

The Juventus attacker has dedicated the goal to his detractors who have previously cast doubts over whether he has the ability to succeed on the international stage.

"The goal against Japan was my first for the national team and it was very exciting," he told reporters. "It is the beginning of my international career and there are those who say I cannot play at the highest level, which I don't agree with, so my goal yesterday was a good way of getting revenge against them."

Cesare Prandelli's men finish Group A with a clash against host Brazil on Saturday to determine which team goes into the latter stages of the competition as group winners.

Galliani dismisses speculation linking Kevin-Prince with Monaco

The 68-year-old has moved to clarify that his visit to the Principality was not linked to the prospective sale of the Ghanaian.AC Milan CEO Adriano Galliani has refuted claims that Kevin-Prince Boateng is on the verge of signing for Monaco.

The Ghana international, 26, has been linked with a switch to Stade Louis II in recent weeks, speculation that has since intensified after it was revealed Galliani had traveled to the Principality.

However, the 68-year-old insisted it was not business which lead him to Monaco and expects the former Tottenham midfielder - whose contract runs out in 2014 - to remain at San Siro beyond this summer.

"There have been no requests for Boateng," Galliani told Sky Sport. "No clubs have tabled an offer for him and he has not expressed a desire to leave.

"There was no meeting with Monaco. I just went for a courtesy visit but nobody believes me."

Meanwhile, the Rossoneri chief also revealed negotiations for the sale of Robinho have stalled with Santos over disagreements regarding the player's value.

"The negotiations for Robinho have stopped. We had been dealing with them but we do not agree on the numbers."

Ian Wright: Arsenal will find it hard to compete for transfers with Manchester United and Chelsea

    281794_heroa.jpg

The former Gunners forward believes Arsene Wenger may miss out on potential transfers if they are also being targeted by the Premier League's elite.Former Arsenal striker Ian Wright has warned the club may struggle to attract high caliber players ahead of its Premier League rivals this summer.

Wright believes the appointments of David Moyes at Manchester United and Jose Mourinho at Chelsea, coupled with Manchester City's resurgence under Manuel Pellegrini and Tottenham's attempts to improve this summer, may make it a difficult transfer market for Arsenal.

"Arsene Wenger’s future at the club is secure, because he has done so much for the club since he got there," said Wright, who was speaking at a charity event at the Marina Bay Sands resort in Singapore. "I feel that the quality of signings over the past few years is the reason why they haven’t won anything in eight years.

"They have to sign players with the right qualities, but they are going into a team to help young players who are coming through.

"I think it’s going to be harder for Arsenal because Manchester United has a new manager, and so do Chelsea," he warned. "Manchester City have a point to prove, and even Tottenham are coming through. It’s going to be hard to try to attract the kind of players that’s not going to want to go to those other clubs."

Agent: No Barcelona contact for Pjanic

The 23-year-old's representative insists he is yet to be contacted by the Blaugrana over any potential move, despite reports in Spain saying otherwise Barcelona has not made an enquiry into Roma playmaker Miralem Pjanic, according to the player's agent.

Reports emanating from Spain on Thursday had suggested that the Liga giants were set to bid 11 million euros for the 23-year-old this summer.

However, Pjanic's representative Michele Gerbino has refuted the speculation and insists his client is content with life at the Stadio Olimpico.

"Miralem is totally focused on his future with Roma. He is happy with the club and has a lot of respect for the Giallorossi," he told Calciomercato.it

"As for the interest from Barcelona, I have not heard anything that and I am yet to be contacted by them.

"They [Barca] have not made any plans to meet with Roma either."

The Bosnia and Herzegovina international, who signed for the Giallorossi in 2011 following a three-year spell with Olympique Lyonnais, is contracted to the Italian capital club until 2015.

    Celta Vigo signs Barcelona's Fontas

The Blaugrana youngster, who spent last season on loan at Mallorca, has signed a three-year deal with the Galicians and will join them for 1 million euros.Celta Vigo have confirmed the signing of Barcelona defender Andreu Fontas on a three-year contract in a deal worth 1 million euros.

The defender made eight Liga appearances for the Blaugrana, spending most of his time at the club with the youth ranks. An anterior cruciate ligament injury suffered against Osasuna in January 2012 hampered his progress, and he spent last season on loan at Mallorca.

Fontas revealed that the chance to link up with former Barca B manager Luis Enrique was key to his decision to join the Galicians.

"[I've chosen Celta because] of the club's project, the way they play and because of the spirit Luis Enrique will pass on," Fontas told the club's official website. "Celta chose me and that made me decide to come and sign a three-year contract."

The 23-year-old was used primarily as a defender during his time at Barca but says he could be deployed in a midfield role at Balaidos.

"I'll be in the position in which the coach puts me," Fontas said. "I've played more at center back than in midfield but I also see myself as a defensive midfielder.

"The important thing is to perform at my best."

    Lyon: Gonalons not for sale

The club insisted that the rumors surrounding any transfer of the 24-year-old are untrue and he will remain at the Stade de Gerland this summer Olympique Lyonnais has insisted that club captain Maxime Gonalons will not be sold this summer.

Rumors of his departure have swirled with the transfer window rapidly approaching, but the French side said that the defensive midfielder - linked with the likes of Napoli and Arsenal in recent weeks - will not be leaving.

"Olympique Lyonnais was very surprised to read in L'Equipe this morning that we would set a transfer figure for Maxime Gonalons and that it would be more than 12 million euros," a statement on the club's official website read.

"The club has no intention of parting with our captain and this is a matter of clear strategy, namely the further development of our club around our best young players from the academy of which Maxime Gonalons is one of the best examples.

"The club therefore deny any contact and any negotiations with Napoli and regret any suggestion otherwise, as suggested in this newspaper."

Gonalons started 35 of 38 games for Lyon this season and played the full 90 in each of those matches.

The 24-year-old, who has been at the Ligue 1 club since the age of 10, has picked up six caps for France to date.

An investigation has since been opened.Cote D’Ivoire booked its place to the third and final round of the 2014 World Cup qualifiers last weekend without Drogba, who is yet to return to the outfit.

    Babel set for Kasimpasa move

The Dutchman has agreed terms on a three-year deal with the Istanbul club after spending just one season back at boyhood club Ajax.Kasimpasa have reached an agreement to sign Ryan Babel on a three-year-deal, according to club executive Oguz Erkan.

The Dutch winger will be leaving Ajax after a one-year stay at his boyhood club, having signed for the Amsterdam giants from Hoffenheim last summer. The likes of Real Betis had been linked with his signature, but the Turkish club looks set to seal a deal for the 26-year-old.

“We have agreed to everything with Babel. We will sign a three-year deal with him,” Erkan told Radyospor.

Babel started his career with Ajax before winning a move to Liverpool in 2007. His form at Anfield stagnated, however, and he moved to Hoffenheim in 2011. After just 18 months in Germany, he returned to the Dutch capital last summer and scored four goals in 16 appearances in an injury-ridden season back in the Eredivisie.

Kasimpasa, meanwhile, performed well in the Super Lig last season, finishing sixth and missing out on a Europa League spot by just five points.

Morata urges Isco to join Real Madrid

The young striker has been telling his Spain Under-21 colleague that the Bernabeu side is the best club in the world and says the future is bright for La Roja.Alvaro Morata has urged Spain Under-21s teammate Isco to join him at Real Madrid this summer.

The young playmaker was in fine form for Malaga last season, scoring nine goals in 37 Liga games and leading the club's charge to the Champions League quarterfinals. Morata has been telling his international teammate to come to the Bernabeu as speculation over a move away from Andalusia intensifies.

“I’ve known Isco for a long time,” Morata told reporters. “I know he has the dribbling ability to do that, so it does not surprise me. Trying to put pressure on him, I said that my team is the best in the world.”

Morata was key in La Rojita's recent Under-21 European championship triumph, claiming the golden boot, and he said that several Madrid officials, such as president Florentino Perez and directors Emilio Butragueno and Miguel Pardeza, have congratulated him.

“The president congratulated me and told me that they had me for next season. Pardeza and Butragueno congratulated me every game, I felt very valued," Morata said. “I’m tired from the trip and celebration, but it is a blessed fatigue. I am very happy with what we have achieved and the work of my colleagues, who have worked like animals so I could win the golden boot.

“I liked the messages from important people of Real Madrid, the Spanish captains and club.”

Morata said he believes that the future is bright for Spain, with the current youngsters ready to push on in the future.

“It’s the best team in the world. The players of the Under-21 team can grow together. With Thiago, Isco, [David] de Gea... I do not even see myself as a guaranteed pick.

“The nicest thing of all has been that all the staff stop with our clubs momentarily to be all for the same country, to defend our country and prove that we are the best.”

Villas-Boas: Tottenham chairman assures Bale will not leave this summer

The Welshman is understood to be high on Real Madrid's list of transfer targets, but his manager reiterated that he will not be leaving the club this summer.Andre Villas-Boas insists that Gareth Bale will not leave Tottenham this summer, despite strong interest from Real Madrid.

The Spanish giant has made no secret of their admiration for the Welshman, with president Florentino Perez recently suggesting it would make a bid once a new manager was in place at the Bernabeu. Villas-Boas has revealed that chairman Daniel Levy has given his word that the 23-year-old will still be at White Hart Lane next season, though.

"We have the pledge of the chairman that Bale is not going to leave the club," Villas-Boas told Spanish newspaper Marca.Bale's 26 goals in all competitions were not enough for Tottenham to secure a place in next season's Champions League, with the club narrowly missing out on Europe's top stage and increasing speculation that he would be seeking a move away.Goal understands that Tottenham is trying to tie the player to a lucrative new £130,000 a week contract, and has promised to allow him to leave next summer should the club once again fail to finish in the top four in the Premier League.
Villas-Boas enjoys a strong relationship with Bale, who has credited the former Chelsea manager with helping to improve his game.

Cavani: Nothing concrete with Real Madrid

The 26-year-old has been linked with a move to the Burnabeu, but insists there is nothing more to the rumors and he is happy with Napoli.Napoli star Edinson Cavani says there is no concrete link with Real Madrid, despite reports suggesting that he is on his way to the Spanish capital.

The Uruguayan has long been linked with a move to the Bernabeu, with Chelsea and Manchester City also said to be vying for his signature.

The striker admits that los Blancos would be an attractive option, but he insists that he is happy to remain at the San Paolo.

“Real Madrid are one of the strongest clubs in the world, but there is nothing concrete,” the striker told the Corriere dello Sport. “At the moment I do not know what my future will hold.”

While his future remains uncertain, the Uruguayan is enjoying his time with his current club.

“In Napoli, they trust me," he said. “I want to play in a club that gives me confidence. I know this is true in Naples, I’m happy to be there."

:cool:De Gea: I hope Thiago joins Manchester United

The Spain Under-21 goalkeeper wants to see his international teammate make the move to Old Trafford this summer, although he has acknowledged a transfer could be problematic.David de Gea would love Barcelona midfielder Thiago to join him at Manchester United next season, but realizes the Spanish champion will not let go of the 22-year-old without putting up a fight.

The Premier League giant is keen to add some fresh blood to the midfield this summer and has reportedly made Thiago one of its primary targets on the transfer market.

"Hopefully I will have a Spanish teammate at United next season. I, and every other Manchester United player, would like him to join the club," De Gea told El Mundo Deportivo. "We have been joking about him joining United. Barcelona will realize that they have a great player, though, and I don't think they will let him go."

The Spain international has a contract with Barcelona until the summer of 2015, but the failure to participate for a stipulated amount of minutes in 2012-13 has seen his exit clause plummet from 90 million euros to a more attractive 18 million; however, his minimum fee release clause returns to 90 million on Aug. 1.

Thiago, whose hat trick in the Under-21 European championship final helped Spain to a 4-2 victory over Italy, is a product of the Barcelona youth academy and has made more than 100 official appearances for the Catalans since making his first team debut in 2008-09.

Newcastle legend Shearer 'sickened' by Kinnear appointment

    149752_heroa.jpg

The Magpies' new director of football has been slammed by the Geordie icon following a gaffe-ridden radio interview and the resignation of managing director Derek Llambias.Former Newcastle player and manager Alan Shearer has described the appointment of Joe Kinnear as the club's new director of football as a “PR disaster”.

The former Wimbledon boss was officially announced in his new role on Tuesday, with the club revealing that both manager Alan Pardew and chief scout Graham Carr would report directly to Kinnear.

Shearer has lambasted the appointment of Kinnear, and believes the 66-year-old – who conducted a gaffe-ridden radio interview earlier this week – has turned Newcastle into a laughing stock.

“Right now people are laughing at the football club I support,” wrote Shearer in The Sun. “And that sickens me. I promised myself years ago never to be surprised by what happens in football — particularly when it comes to Newcastle. But this situation really is stretching it a bit.

"While other clubs are all plotting and planning for next season, Newcastle have a manager who has just been totally undermined. Alan Pardew has said he will carry on but I am sure it will be a difficult situation. I ask one question of Joe Kinnear: Would you stand for it, if you were manager? As for that announcement, what are the players to think when he can’t even get their names right. It’s all a PR disaster.”

Del Bosque: Tahiti sportsmanship good for football

    289176_heroa.jpg

The Spain boss praised the professional manner in which the match was played as his side came out commanding 10-0 winners in Rio de JaneiroSpain coach Vicente del Bosque has praised the competitive spirit of Tahiti as well as the professional manner of his side's performance in the wake of la Roja's 10-0 rout.

Eddy Etaeta's men went into the Confederations Cup match as overwhelming underdogs and, despite the gulf in class and massive deficit at full-time, won over many neutrals inside the Maracana as they bravely fought against the European and world champions.

The Spain boss was full of superlatives for Tahiti when questioned after the match, and also spoke of his delight at the sportsmanship showed by his own squad."You have to look at the positives," Del Bosque told reporters. "We've played with good tone, intensity and we have been respectful.

"Surely that sportmanship [Spain and Tahiti players embracing after the match] is also good for football."The 62-year-old went on to discuss the atmosphere during in the match, in which Tahiti was clearly favored by the local fans in Rio de Janeiro, though he thinks his team is growing on the Brazilian public.

"I am sure that there were whistles against Spain, and some went beyond the football field," he said.“The people showed us their affection against Uruguay and are showing us more day-by-day."

Spain faces Nigeria on Sunday in pole position to reach the semifinal of the Confederations Cup, having already notched up two wins and 12 goals from its first two Group B matches.

Torres hails Tahiti as the perfect example

    290198_heroa.jpg

The Spain star was inspired by the Pacific side's approach and says its spirit is more important than the four goals he scored in his side's 10-0 win RIO DE JANEIRO -- Fernando Torres has hailed the example shown by Tahiti as more important than the four goals he scored in Spain’s 10-0 victory over the Pacific islanders in the Confederations Cup on Thursday.

Spain’s win over a team made up of amateurs edged the European and world champion closer to the semifinals of the Brazil tournament, but the Tahiti story captured the hearts of the Roja players as well as the boisterous crowd in the Maracana.

"What we take from this game is the example the Tahiti team, who played with 100 percent passion and fair play until the end," said Torres.

"They try to play properly, they try to enjoy themselves. They don’t try to stop the game or kick players - they enjoy their football and that is the big thing we take from the game today.

"We were taking pictures with their players after the game. They are happy people and I really enjoyed seeing them smiling and enjoying themselves until the last minute."

Torres scored four times after opening the scoring, despite missing a penalty, as Spain mauled Tahiti with further goals from David Villa (three), David Silva (two) and Juan Mata.

The Chelsea striker described scoring in the revamped Maracana as ‘more than a dream’ and admitted Vicente del Bosque’s side showed no mercy to its opponent.

Torres added: "It’s more than a dream. No one can imagine scoring four goals in the Maracana in an official game in a great tournament.

"We focused like we were playing a final. We played with intensity and professionalism. We want to finish first in the group and we showed that with our professionalism."

Manchester United close to signing Barcelona midfielder Thiago Alcantara in a deal worth £17 million
Manchester United are close to making Thiago Alcantara the first major signing of David Moyes’s reign at manager Old Trafford.

    thiago_2596344b.jpg

Despite efforts this week by Barcelona to persuade the Spain Under-21 captain to reject offers to leave the Nou Camp this summer, it is understood that the attacking midfielder – the son of Brazil World Cup winner Mazinho – is ready to move to United to secure regular first-team football.
United are prepared to trigger a £17 million release clause in the 22-year-old’s contract, which is now in play due to Thiago failing to make a required number of appearances for Barcelona last season owing to the presence of Xavi, Andrés Iniesta and Cesc Fabregas at the Spanish champions.
Thiago, who emerged as one of the stars of the recent European Under-21 Championship in Israel before scoring a hat-trick in Tuesday’s final against Italy, came close to signing for United two years ago before choosing to stay at Barcelona.
But despite being persuaded to remain at the club by former coach Pep Guardiola, Thiago’s frustration at his lack of first-team opportunities have prompted his decision to leave, with the player admitting this week his ineligibility from future under-21 internationals has forced him to consider his prospects of playing for Spain at next year’s World Cup.

Liverpool are close to finalising a deal for Luis Alberto with the Sevilla forward due on Merseyside for a medical on Friday, Sky sources understand.
The Spain U21 international is set to join the Anfield outfit on a four-year contract with a fee expected to be in the region of £7m.The 20-year-old scored 11 goals while on loan with Barcelona B in Spain's Segunda Division last season, but the Catalans decided not to exercise an option to sign him on a permanent deal.

That opened the door for Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers to pursue his interest in Alberto, who is set to become the Reds' third signing of the close season.Rodgers has already put deals in place to sign Iago Aspas from Celta Vigo for £7.7m, while Kolo Toure will complete a free transfer from Manchester City when the transfer window officially opens on 1 July.
