Metro 2033 Film Rights Picked Up By MGM

The book-turned-game could see a big-screen release courtesy of mega-studio MGM. F. Scott Frazier is penning the script.

The novel, which details a post-apocalyptic Russia where the remnants of humanity scratch out a meager existence in the ruins of underground subway networks, was originally published online in 2002 in Russia. It received a physical novel edition in 2009 and an English version in 2010. The well-received video game from THQ and 4A Games also hit in 2010, with a sequel named Metro: Last Light due out next year.

Production company Gran Via (The Notebook, The Guardian [TV show]) is behind the film. Writer F. Scott Frazier is listed as a QA tester for a few low-budget licensed games at THQ in 2004 at IMDB, as well as penning several screenplays including the upcoming John Cusack thriller The Numbers Station and Warner Bros.' Line of Sight.

No release date or other information for a Metro film has been announced.
