School rugby review
The Royal College ruggerites return to the pavilion after their splendid effort against defending champions St. Peter’s College. Royal, after an unimpressive start did well to beat St. Peter’s College on Saturday. (Pic by Nishan S. Priyantha)

Trinity College, with an unimposing (25-14) win against their home town rivals last Friday at Pallekele remain on top with one of the toughest challenges ahead of them against Royal College in the first leg of the 63rd Bradby Shield encounter, which will also count as a crucial game in the Singer League at the Royal Sports Complex come next Saturday.

The efforts of that dazzling winger, Vishavajith Wijesinghe who was nursing a wrist injury led Trinity to a comfortable victory in the end with his dexterity and speed. He scored as much as three tries to take the game away from the Rajans and helped Trinity to remain in the top slot, with an average of 3.75.

The Lions need once more to focus a great deal on their place kicking where they continue to suffer. It is going to cost them dearly, if they don’t get their kicking boots in the right place in the remaining matches of the League.

On the other hand, the Rajans, who turned up as a rejuvenated unit came up an impressive effort with their forwards providing Trinity a hard time in their own den. But they failed to achieve the ultimate on a number occasions, despite dominating a greater part of the game.

The evenly poised encounter drifted into a fiasco off of the field at the end when a section of unruly spectators ran riot by storming the buses carrying the Trinity College players which caused injury to a number of Trinity College schoolboys, including a player. The perpetrators also damaged nearly ten vehicles.

Kingswood Vs Isipatana

Kingswood, after an uncharacteristic display scarped through to record a win in a low scoring affair. The final scores stood 6 points to 3 in favour of the lads from Randle Hills as they beat Isipatana College, at Havelock Park, last Friday.

This enabled the Kingswoodians to keep their chances of winning the league open as they shot up to number two from being at number three last week.

Both teams cannot be impressed about the manner in which they handled pressure situations which at times declined even below the standards of novices taking into the oval shaped ball game.

Yet the game turned out to be an even affair with quarter neither asked nor given. Isipatana, who had many a chance of scoring could not make any headway due to lack of coordination and finish after the turn around in particularly and thus they had to taste defeat once again.

With the outcome of this game, Isiaptana will languish in the same number six spot with a vital battle ahead of them against St. Peter’s College on Saturday at Longden Place, when Kingswood lock horns with their home town rivals Dharmaraja College at the Bogamabra Stadium on the same day.

Royal vs. St Peter’s

It was certainly a bolt from the blues. The script had to be rewritten as Royal College bounced back against all odds in overpowering defending champions St. Peter’s College by 17 points to 12.

This could be recorded as the most enthralling encounter of the weekend. The Petes, who put up an energetic effort were unlucky to have been at the receiving end with seldom conceding any chances. Yet the Royalists came out with a well crafted plan and they acted with that in view to walk away victorious. Meanwhile, immense improvements were shown by the Royalists in the set pieces and their three quarters were well set to deliver the desired result with good coordination with the forwards.

At the dying stages of the game, the Petes, who countered the pressure and force well went on the offensive but then it was too late as the Royalists had inflicted damage on the visitors. As a result of this win, the Royalists move ahead for the first leg of the Bradby Shield on a gracious winning note to fight and brimming with confidence.

S. Thomas’s vs. Vidyartha

The lads from S. Thomas’ College made this an opportunity to run riot over the hapless lads from Vidyartha College and as a result they managed to accumulate as much as 64 points whilst banking the visitors in a lop-sided encounter a Mount Lavina last Saturday.

Accountable for the highest count of tries was the duo, crack centres - Savith Kalupathirana and Niluk Wickramthilake who together amassed seven tries.

Vidayartha, on the other hand, are left with no option but facing relegation together with two other teams from the home town St. Anthony’s and Dharmaraja. Vidayrtha who hang about at the bottom of the table will meet S. Anthony’s this Saturday at Nittawela, when the Singer League inter school rugby tournament moves to a very decisive week.

Mahanama cruise to sixth win

By M. Shamil Amit

Mahanama cruised through to their sixth win in the Singer Division 1B inter-school rugby tournament when they outclassed Prince of Wales 34-5 at Longden Place yesterday.

The match which was expected to be a close tussle in the end turned out to be a one sided affair with Mahanama having a one way ticket to victory. Mahanama having led 14-0 at the breather collected their points through three goals, two tries and a penalty as against a try by the Cambrians. The winners began their scoring as early as in the tenth minute after referee M.H.M. Faisal blew the whistle.

It was prop forward Hasanga Piyasekera who made that first move which was converted by second row Mahesh Kumaranayake. Hasanga followed it up with another try seven minutes later which was again converted by Mahesh before the sides changed for lemons. The resumption saw Mahanama again having their own way first through a try by centre Sumudu Fernando with Mahesh adding the extra points. A few minutes later Mahesh booted over a penalty to give Mahanama a healthy 24-0 lead.

Two more unconverted tries within a space of ten minutes from wing three quarter Chathura Shanuka and full back Mithun Shamen saw the winners increase their lead to 34-0. Then in the dying stages Cambrians wing three quarter Asanka Ratnayake gave them a consolation try and with the conversion going astray, the match ended.

Mahanama with this win are now assured of their promotion to the top division whatever the outcome in their final against S. Joseph’s is going end.

A Weekend with full of excitement!!!

    © Sri Lanka Rugby News

This coming weekend has lot to offer for the rugby enthusiasts in Sri Lanka.

On 13th Friday, St. Peter’s and Isipathana will meet at Havelock Park. This is a crucial game for both teams. St. Peter’s after their shock defeat to Royal last week would want to regain their prestige by not only winning the match but also earning the bonus point by scoring at least 4 Tries in the match. Isipathana on the other hand would like to win the match to regain their lost pride.

On 14th Saturday, we have the first leg of the 64th Bradby Shield encounter between Trinity College and Royal College. Trinity are well set to win the 2008 Singer League Group “A” title while Royal are full of thrust after they won the match against St. Peter’s last weekend. This is also a Singer league group “A” match.

On 15th Sunday, two unbeaten teams in the Caltex league, Kandy and CR & FC will meet for the first time this season. Nalaka Weerakoddy will come out of retirement to empower the Kandy team for the first time this season. Also the match will be officiated by James Fitzgerald, a neutral referee from the Arabian Gulf.

Little bit for Isipathana Rugby History

    Incomparable Isipathana

Isipathana College which is only 50 years old has an impressive record of notable achievements in rugby since the game was introduced to the school by Maurice de Abrew, Vice President of Havelocks Sports Club.
From 1960 to 1963 Isipathana played friendly games against under-17 teams of all rugby playing schools and during this period there were a host of personalities like Eric de Silva, Michael Loos, Franklin Jacob and Edward Bartholomuez who rallied round to uplift rugger at Isipathana.
In 1963/64 former President of the Sri Lanka Rugby Football Union (SLRFU) Y. C. Chang took over coaching Isipathana who played their historic first match against St. Anthony's College Katugastota in Kandy and beat them 8-3 under the captaincy of Brian Ingram. Isipathana's first try was scored by Dayalu Perera.
In 1965 Isipathana was affiliated to the Sri Lanka Rugby Football Union's schools section and from that day onwards Isipathana has been in the forefront of school rugby in Sri Lanka. In 1965 under the first official captain Ana Saranapala and coach Maurice Silva, Isipathana fared well during the inter school season. In 1967 the Isipathana versus Thurstan match for the Abdul Jabbar Trophy was inaugurated and Isipathana has the distinction of winning the trophy consecutively for 24 years.
From 1968 to 1971 Isipathana rugby rose to great heights being unbeaten for four years under the guidance of the All Ceylon hooker Frankie David. In 1976 under the captaincy of Ginigalgodage, Isipathana beat Zahira 116-0, the highest score in an inter school first XV match. In 1977 another milestone was reached by H. K. Sisira who scored 25 tries in a single season which made him the first schoolboy to achieve the feat. In 1979 Isipathana recorded the highest score in school rugby by beating Nalanda College125-0 in an U-17 match.
In 1979/80 Isipathana was selected to represent Sri Lanka for the Asian Schools Rugby Football tournament held in Bangkok. Isipathana went as under-dogs for the tournament, but were named as the 'most outstanding' team after a scintillating performance with defending champions Vajiravudh College.
In 1980 Isipathana created history at rugby in Sri Lanka by producing the first schoolboy to represent Sri Lanka in the mould of Hisham Abdeen who represented the national side at the Asian championships. In 1980 Isipathana became the Sevens champions for the first time. Isipathana went on to win the Sevens trophy for four years in a row (1980/81/82/83) before losing it to Royal in 1984. But Isipathana won the trophy back again in 1985/86/87/88.
In 1981 the Isipathana-Trinity fixture was restored after a lapse of 12 years.
Rugby at Isipathana reached its peak in the eighties under that great mentor O. W. R. Perera who took over the task of coaching the side from 1979. Again in 1982 Isipathana produced another unbeaten team and was selected for the Asian Schools tournament in Bangkok to be adjudged the "Most Exciting Team" in the tournament for a bustling brand of rugby. It was also voted the Most Popular Schools rugger team in Sri Lanka and was awarded the Milo Trophy.
In 1985/86 Isipathana became the triple champions by winning the schools Sevens tournament and the inaugural knock-out tournament for the Premadasa Trophy. The team was tagged the kings of schools rugby in the annual league season which made them the first school team to become triple champs. The team retained the same unblemished record in the following year.
In 1987 Isipathana created a landmark in Sri Lanka's rugby history when 10 Isipatanians including two schoolboys were selected for the national squad that toured Wales. In 1987/88 and 89 Isipathana became runners-up in the Premadasa knock-out tournament. In 1989 Isipathana were coached by M. P. F. Sallay and Sanath Martis and the team won the inaugural Gymkhana U-20 Invitation Tournament. The team reached the final by beating the much fancied Havelocks Sports Club in the semi-finals. In 1989/90 Isipathana won the schools seven-a-side tournament.
In 1991 our team was suspended by the SLRFU for fielding an overaged player. In 1992 the school became champs in the under 13,15 and 17 tournaments respectively. The same year the under-19 team captained by Champika Nishantha became triple champs. The following year in 1993 under the captaincy of Chamila Samantha the under 19 team took the runners up berth in the Premadasa Trophy. In 1995 under the captaincy of R. Wahied the school emerged runners up at the President's Trophy and the following year (1996) the school had the opportunity under the captaincy of Bandula Mallikaarachchi to be crowned the League, Knock-out and President's trophy champions.
The 1997 the under-19 team captained by Vajira Hewage became the Sevens champs, the league trophy champs and also took the U-19 President's Trophy the same year. Shamly Nawaz captained the 1998 team in Singapore for the Tiger Cup where they competed against 12 countries to win the cup beating a team from New Zealand in the final. In 1999 the team captained by Crishan Chandran become champs in the Tens, League, President's Trophy and the Kandy Sports Club schools Sevens tournaments.
In the year 2000 Hamesh Gunaratne captained the team to celebrate a winning spree as the team became the Western Province 10-a-side champs and in the same year the team captained by Ranga Perera won the Sevens Trophy. In conclusion the year 2001 saw the team captained by Ranga Perera taking the President's Trophy and emerging runners up in the League. The same year the U-17 team won the 10-a- side and the U-17 trophies.
It is with deep sorrow that I wish to record the demise of four of the College's illustrious ruggerites. They are former Isipathana and Havelocks skipper M. P. F. Sallay who captained Isipathana in 1978 and played for the school for five years before wearing the Sri Lanka jersey with distinction. He played for Havelocks from 1979 to 1984 and coached the Isipathana team.
The late Nilantha Lakshmeewewa was one of the best centres to represent the national team after making his debut at the age of 19 when he was selected for a tour of Wales in 1987. The Isipathana College team was captained by him in 1987.
Suranga Warnasuriya a young ruggerite while practicing collapsed and was found dead. Nalin Katuwapitiya a former winger of the 1988 team passed away under tragic circumstances last year.
