Trinity College, with an unimposing (25-14) win against their home town rivals last Friday at Pallekele remain on top with one of the toughest challenges ahead of them against Royal College in the first leg of the 63rd Bradby Shield encounter, which will also count as a crucial game in the Singer League at the Royal Sports Complex come next Saturday.
The efforts of that dazzling winger, Vishavajith Wijesinghe who was nursing a wrist injury led Trinity to a comfortable victory in the end with his dexterity and speed. He scored as much as three tries to take the game away from the Rajans and helped Trinity to remain in the top slot, with an average of 3.75.
The Lions need once more to focus a great deal on their place kicking where they continue to suffer. It is going to cost them dearly, if they don’t get their kicking boots in the right place in the remaining matches of the League.
On the other hand, the Rajans, who turned up as a rejuvenated unit came up an impressive effort with their forwards providing Trinity a hard time in their own den. But they failed to achieve the ultimate on a number occasions, despite dominating a greater part of the game.
The evenly poised encounter drifted into a fiasco off of the field at the end when a section of unruly spectators ran riot by storming the buses carrying the Trinity College players which caused injury to a number of Trinity College schoolboys, including a player. The perpetrators also damaged nearly ten vehicles.
Kingswood Vs Isipatana
Kingswood, after an uncharacteristic display scarped through to record a win in a low scoring affair. The final scores stood 6 points to 3 in favour of the lads from Randle Hills as they beat Isipatana College, at Havelock Park, last Friday.
This enabled the Kingswoodians to keep their chances of winning the league open as they shot up to number two from being at number three last week.
Both teams cannot be impressed about the manner in which they handled pressure situations which at times declined even below the standards of novices taking into the oval shaped ball game.
Yet the game turned out to be an even affair with quarter neither asked nor given. Isipatana, who had many a chance of scoring could not make any headway due to lack of coordination and finish after the turn around in particularly and thus they had to taste defeat once again.
With the outcome of this game, Isiaptana will languish in the same number six spot with a vital battle ahead of them against St. Peter’s College on Saturday at Longden Place, when Kingswood lock horns with their home town rivals Dharmaraja College at the Bogamabra Stadium on the same day.
Royal vs. St Peter’s
It was certainly a bolt from the blues. The script had to be rewritten as Royal College bounced back against all odds in overpowering defending champions St. Peter’s College by 17 points to 12.
This could be recorded as the most enthralling encounter of the weekend. The Petes, who put up an energetic effort were unlucky to have been at the receiving end with seldom conceding any chances. Yet the Royalists came out with a well crafted plan and they acted with that in view to walk away victorious. Meanwhile, immense improvements were shown by the Royalists in the set pieces and their three quarters were well set to deliver the desired result with good coordination with the forwards.
At the dying stages of the game, the Petes, who countered the pressure and force well went on the offensive but then it was too late as the Royalists had inflicted damage on the visitors. As a result of this win, the Royalists move ahead for the first leg of the Bradby Shield on a gracious winning note to fight and brimming with confidence.
S. Thomas’s vs. Vidyartha
The lads from S. Thomas’ College made this an opportunity to run riot over the hapless lads from Vidyartha College and as a result they managed to accumulate as much as 64 points whilst banking the visitors in a lop-sided encounter a Mount Lavina last Saturday.
Accountable for the highest count of tries was the duo, crack centres - Savith Kalupathirana and Niluk Wickramthilake who together amassed seven tries.
Vidayartha, on the other hand, are left with no option but facing relegation together with two other teams from the home town St. Anthony’s and Dharmaraja. Vidayrtha who hang about at the bottom of the table will meet S. Anthony’s this Saturday at Nittawela, when the Singer League inter school rugby tournament moves to a very decisive week.
