Dear Kiri-putha,

Please can you post an image of the Sinhala alphabet with your idea for "za" included. I have a Sinhala alphabet on my computer with another z letter which looks like letter ස with a small English z on its left. ie: zස

Here is the letter I use for "za".

I saw this, combined with ි, in an old issue of Divaina from 1997 and it appears in various combinations (each English word would have a Sinhala spelling, indicating promunciation, next to it in brackets) in my copy of De Zoysas English-Sinhala dictionary at home.​

The letter which MuslimLankan proposed for the "za" sound looks like the old Sinhala number 7. But it is also a good proposal.

Who wants to add a W letter to the Sinhala alphabet? We already have a letter, ව, for that sound!

Yesterday in a function at the Sri Lanka Canada Friendship Association here in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, I showed the following two proposed letters for Z to several people and was surprised to find that they liked the second idea put forward by kiri-putha as opposed to the Z letter shown in the first picture shown below.

They explained to me the reason being that the first letter, put forward by sriboysl, looks too similar to ශ. Whereas, kiri-puthas letter, shown below, would be a better one for the Z sound as it looks similar to ස.

One person suggested the letter for the Z sound could even look something like a ස with the arm attached to the top right of ජ attached to ස and I humorously suggested a ස with an English letter z written in the middle of ස.


After a lengthy discussion with these people, I think the second letter put forward by kiri-putha would be a great letter for the Z sound.

Although, from what I saw in an earlier post from sriboysl, I think that sriboysl's letter was actually drawn up by some Sinhala language experts and hopefully someday, kiri-puthas letter will be suggested to these same experts and maybe that will be the one that gets added in the Sinhala alphabet.
