Today’s match is a good example as to what would happen when bowlers don’t have a strategy.

And I think we have to be ready to accept that perhaps Pathirana might not do well in long overs (but he should be given the opportunity to polish technique/strategy). I think Pathirana is bound to be expensive and that’s why he’s a great death specialist in short form cricket.

Please don’t mismanage and ruin the kid.

But this is not as simple as it sounds too.

Why Pathirana was such an effective weapon in IPL because there was a powerhouse of a batting lineup to offset the runs from his extras and loose balls. And they could comfortably use him in the deaths only due to impact player option. Plus a mature mentor in the form of a captain helped. The team protected him like the youngest kid of a family.

In SL, he won’t have support from the batters and we cannot afford to have a bowler exclusively for death overs. And cannot expect much guidance from amateur captaincy surrounded by a bunch of team members whose priority is playing to save their asses than aiming for victory…not to mention the possibility of interfering politics. Not the greatest environment for improvement of a young talent.

And he still has to work on his technique, control and strategy. It’s not like he’s a perfect natural talent.
