My personal preference is always Front loaders. I would never go for a top loader.
Most top loaders have an agitator. Clothes can become tangled, snagged and stretched (specially vests), damaging the fabric.
There are top loaders without an agitator. These use an impeller. My opinion is that the Front loaders are the best.

There is no right or wrong answer really. Ultimately it boils down to what your budget and the requirement is.
