These graphic pictures take me back some 30 years. I was on my way home, from work one day in 1986 or 87. I was late more than an hour, because our bloody director call a meeting at the last minute. My routine was to come to pettah, have a drink of PALATHURU BEEMA from siyarata (A fruit juice with ice cream only 3 rupees at that time ) and catch the next bus. I am coming from waththala and going to kottawa. On this day we heard a big explosion and smoke billowing from pettah area, but not any news about what or where is the explosion. No mobiles at all , even landlines are not widespread. Our bus being turned around by police without giving any explanation. "KOTI GAHANAWAA, WISAALA BOMBEKIN MULU PITAKOTUWAMA IWARAYI, EHE YANNA BAHA" is the only news we got. So I walk all the way to one of my relative's place and spend the night over there and come to pettah to go home (and to see the devastation ) next morning as soon as curfew being lifted at 6.00am.
I came in to pettah to see a replica of "HIROSHIMA". My favourite fruit drink shop gone with all the friendly staff, who gave me 2 scoops of ice cream as a regular customer. There was a big hole on the ground behind the bo tree surrounded by burnt out buses and body parts of human beings. To this day there was one thing stamped in my memory from that disaster. There was a piece of scull about the size of a 'box of matches' with some 3-4 foot long black hair. I am a Buddhist, and thought to myself this could be mine if I am on time that day. So only then I thought "HAMADEMA WENNE HONDATAI"
