It looks like none of the entries in this survey covers the real need for obtaining a Ph.D. To obtain a Ph.D. you need to conduct a thorough investigation within a particular research interest. Please note that obtaining a Ph.D. is a lifelong dedication where you should obviously have a passion for conducting research. It is absurd if someone is looking to obtain a Ph.D. because she or he feels insecure.

With regards to the foreign and local training that you obtain, I personally wish if someone can expose to a different setting rather than obtaining all levels of degrees from one single institution. Again, it depends on what kind of research you need to be involved in. I would say there is only one thing that you need to obtain a Ph.D. - that is PASSION!
