Oh ,As per your thinking The US military won the war, but they had to leave the country under fire, leaving a large haul of military hardware behind. Just the same as they did in Somalia, Vietnam and Iraq. they may call it any thing but it is a defeat.

battle victories do not always translate to military victory.

The Vietnam War is the best display of this; during that conflict, the US military won almost all battles while Vietnamese forces lost each engagement but ultimately won the War.
