CT Sports: Ten Sports cricket commentator Dean Jones offered food for thought for Sri Lanka's cricketing administrators as he criticized the decision of veteran Sri Lanka batsman Kumar Sangakkara to skip the third and final Test against Pakistan which ended at Pallekele yesterday.
Pakistan defeated Sri Lanka by seven wickets in the third and final Test in Pallekele on Tuesday to win their first series on the island since 2006.
Jones, 54, who was a guest on Ten Sports program 'Straight Drive' and in his post match analysis with Pakistan commentator Sikander Bakht, said in no uncertain terms that had Sangakkara made a similar request from Cricket Australia (CA), the latter would have told the former off.
Kumar Sangakkara last month ended speculation about his cricketing future, saying he will retire during the home series against India in August, having already decided to forgo the Test series finale against Pakistan.
Jones said that the former Sri Lanka captain Kumar Sangakkara would have had his own reasons for opting out of the deciding third and final Test against Pakistan in Pallekele, but stressed for him country would always come first.
"The way I look at it Kumar (Sangakkara), may have had his way with his bosses here," Jones, one of the finest batsmen of his generation told Bakht, when asked for his views on whether Sri Lanka had missed the veteran left-hander in the series decider.
"Well, look when a team chases down a score of 377 in the fourth innings of a Test, it doesn't look as if though, that even the presence of a player of the caliber of Kumar Sangakkara would have made a difference to the outcome of it.
"And he (Sangakkara) may have got his wish to play country cricket in England, which is in a way not a bad choice, as at the end of the day money talks, when compared to what is on offer for Test cricket nowadays.
'But, for me representing one's country would always be the ultimate pinnacle and that cannot be diluted whatsoever.
"Also I can tell you as an Australian, that if someone had made a similar request from Cricket Australia (CA), they would have told that particular player irrespective of his standing in the game to go fly a kite.
"That is simply because no player whatever his status or following may be, can be bigger than the sport of cricket and that is the way cricket is administered back home in Australia where I come from."
Amidst the doom and gloom of another Test series lost at home, Jones also told Bakht that Sri Lanka's fast bowling stocks were in good order.
He singled out speedster Dushmantha Chameera as one to look out for as the latter had shown promise with the sheer pace he generates to go far in Test match cricket.
