Seriously what's the requirement of having a wedding? I mean legally..
Only having the engagement isn't enough? Is there a thing such as it is easy to get a divorce when only the engagement is done but not the wedding?
can someone explain this in legal terms?

Engagement has no legal binding.

Marriage has a legal binding.

Only Three reason for divorce by Sri Lankan LAW.

1. Incurable Erectile dysfunction at time of marriage. (If ED can be treated by medicine like Viagra or penis implants then female can't ask for divorce)

If you get ED 1 year years after marriage then not acceptable for divorce. Only ED at "time of marriage" and only if it's incurable.

Today ED is completely curable with implants.


2. Adultry WITH proof. (Kotu panima). Video Recordings, photos. (Solid proof)


3. Constructive Malicious desertation.

If one party leaves to parental home due to heavy abuse.

You need to tell the court why you left him/her

"Heavy abuse" is physical torture.

Under Sri lankan divorce law from 1800's (Victorian times) these 3 points leads to divorce

So if wife/husband leaves you for no reason, it's not acceptable.

But in western countries, mutual divorce is possible. (Denna kamathen divorce ilanawa)

In each case of divorce court grants penalty.

Maximum penalty is Adultry. It can be high as 50% of your assets (house/bank money) or part of salary to be paid over years.

Court will value your property and divide them.

Divorce case in SL usually last 3- 5 years or even more.

Divorce in Sri Laka due to victorial era legislation (from 1800) is not a good option at all
