You make me wanna read the books more and more.But I feel like reading such massive books are a rather tedious activity for me personally.But I would give a try to read them for there obviously are a lot of critical details in them which cannot be converted into the visual medium!!

A time for wolves may have the idea of actual wolves overtaking human lands which are over run by famine & plague cause of endless war.
A dream of Spring is in the sense that everything is ending and things are getting calm & stable

But then I went into books. And there was no turning back
TV show eka mokadda kiyala hithuna. Tried to watch some episodes after but it was boring and bit disappointing to be honest. No offence to the Got tv show fanatics.

The main thing is in the books, every chapter is written in a specific characters' point of view.
For an example in the first book "Game of Thrones" the starting chapter after the prologue is simply named as "Bran". And in that chapter everything is described from brandons' point of view. What he feels, what he sees & his thoughts. That's freakin amazing! So chapter after chapter we go into certain characters minds and feel & see what they feel & see.

The other strong point is the history. Could be very well described and is in the books but the series is helpless in that department.

Another thing, the sex scenes
George Martin has a brilliant way of describing them.
And of course imagination helps alot

Reading the books seems to be like a very entertaining activity.And also the fact that the story being told in characters point of view too can be a very awesome experience.And of course I also think its necessary to read the books in order to get a grasp on the history of the story & the imagination could be a really fantastic thing too when coming to fantasy stuff!!
