No one is going to develop a solution like word or Photoshop
. Everybody will develop something which can share work load across the organization
. This can easily captured by a web based solution
. But you can go for a standalone build too
. Ex: I developed a solution which will be directly installed to the local machine
. It’s okay to develop a system like that. But how it’s going to share data with other workstations?
Hope you guys familiar with n-tier architecture (AKA Multi tire architecture)
. If you can do something like that, you can go for a standalone build rather than a web based solution
. Just follow n-tier architecture.

True. I have the same opinion. Well, it's all depend on the client's requirements. If the client needs the db to be accessed from anywhere or even within a LAN, then it's generally the case the db is hosted in a remote server. But that doesn't mean you must implement it using a web based solution. You can even develop a RMI based GUI client application if you are coding in java. The key thing is you'r choice of technologies should complement your requirements.

I think your comments are very helpful for all BIT students.
By the way, your system is sharing/accessing data from a shared db, hence not a complete standalone system.
Simply, standalone systems can work offline and not part of other systems. That is the meaning of it.
